Excited or Nervous?

Today, I want to share a little realization I had while giving a talk at an event organized by Women Lead Change. During my talk, I shared ideas on how to improve company culture in 1% increments and received great feedback from the audience. It got me thinking about public speaking and the strategies I use to feel confident before giving talks, sales presentations, or any other scenario where I need to speak publicly.

One strategy I use, which I learned from Mel Robbins, is to tell myself that I'm excited instead of nervous. This is based on the fact that excitement and nervousness produce the same physiological symptoms in the body, such as sweaty hands or a dry mouth. By channeling that energy into excitement and positive thinking, I can speak more confidently and intelligently.

Before my last four to five speaking engagements and all my sales presentations and demos, I smiled and said to myself, "I'm excited to give this talk. I'm excited to add value to people. I'm excited to share the knowledge that I've acquired over the last ten years in business. I'm excited to do this today." By doing this, I was able to shift my mindset from nervousness to excitement and feel more confident in my ability to deliver the message.

If you're someone who feels nervous before public speaking or any other scenario where you need to speak publicly, I encourage you to try this strategy. Channel that energy into excitement and positive thinking, and you'll notice a significant difference in your confidence and ability to deliver your message. Remember, you know your stuff, and with the right mindset, you can communicate it effectively and impactfully.

In conclusion, speaking publicly can be nerve-wracking, but it doesn't have to be. By telling yourself that you're excited and channeling that energy into positive thinking, you can feel more confident and deliver your message more effectively. Try it out the next time you have a speaking engagement or any other scenario where you need to speak publicly, and see the difference it makes!
